Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground chuck
  • 1 large sweet onion, sliced
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese
  • 4 slices marble rye bread
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 2 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tbsp yellow mustard

Instructions

  1. Finely chop the onion and shape ground beef into four equal patties; season with salt and pepper.
  2. In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tbsp butter and add the onions. Cook for about 15 minutes until caramelized.
  3. Increase heat to medium-high and grill the beef patties for 4-5 minutes on each side until browned.
  4. Add cheese slices on top of each patty during the last minute of cooking; cover to melt.
  5. Butter one side of each slice of rye bread. In another skillet, place one slice butter-side down, layer with a patty, caramelized onions, another cheese slice, then top with another piece of bread.
  6. Grill both sides until golden brown (about 3-4 minutes). Serve hot.
